20 reasonsGreat Reasons Why You Should Visit The History Center!

Here are July's 10 great reasons to confirm that much is happening at The History Center! We ARE part of history today!

1 Because it’s summer in the Finger Lakes, and the perfect time to see our ‘Summer in the Finger Lakes exhibit’ beginning July 14th at the Tompkins County Regional Airport. The theme of the exhibit is ‘Native American Tourism.’

2 Articles by our ‘Student Historians’ begin appearing in the Ithaca Journal this month.

3The History Center recently mounted a beautiful photographic exhibit at the Southside Community Center, celebrating the life and work of James L. Gibbs, one of the first executive directors of the Southside. Gibbs and his wife Hortense were leading figures in Ithaca's African American community throughout the middle years of the 20th century. Their contribution to racial progress for all Ithacans was incalculable. The exhibit features the African American community and the Southside Community Center, as well as Gibbs himself, in the 1930s and 1940s.

4 Because the History Center is currently having a Seconds Sale on historic photos..feel free to stop by the museum and browse through the selection.

5 Because we’re currently preparing to launch a scintillating series of exhibits on local transportation. Stay tuned for details…

6 Our collection of historic lake life and waterfall photographs, the perfect gift for the water enthusiast who has everything, and for those who have a special place in their hearts for Ithaca’s waterspots!

7 It is almost time for The Annual Eight Square Schoolhouse Festival – mark your calendar: August 23rd from noon to 4pm at the Schoolhouse, located at 1748 Upper Hanshaw Road, just around the corner from Route 13, across the street from High Speed Checkweighers! We hope to see you there!!

8 Because the Ithaca Public Education Initiative has kindly secured an anonymous donation of $10,000 to underwrite the cost of helping to preserve the Eight Square Schoolhouse, whose Living History Program serves over 700 local school children. Many thanks from all of us at the History Center.

9 Because the Eight Square Schoolhouse Living History Program is seeking to expand its pool of ‘teachers’ for the 2008/09 school year. Channel your inner ‘school marm’ and teach in an eighteenth century schoolroom setting. Contact Carole West for details: 273.8284 ext.3

10 Because the History Center would like to learn about your local historical tales with subjects leaning toward the macabre…If you have any spooky or unusual historical tales from the downtown Ithaca area, please send them to community@thehistorycenter.net or call 607.273.8284 x.6.
