The History Center in Tompkins County will unveil its new exhibition on postcards and ephemera from their permanent collection from July 7th to September 29th, 2012.

Various areas of Tompkins County, particularly Cayuga Lake, Taughannock Falls, Buttermilk Falls and Cornell University, will be explored through the display of over 500 postcards and ephemeral items – such as hotel brochures, photographs and textiles – which evoke a sense of place, nostalgia and recognition for the allure of Tompkins County. A smaller section of the exhibition will focus on the practical uses of postcards as early forms of alternative communication. This exhibition will be interactive in multiple ways, with a life-size postcard allowing visitors to photograph themselves, a slideshow of enlarged postcards, and replica postcards that allow visitors to play “tour guides” and uncover more information about each of the four main destinations aforementioned.
