Who We Are

The History Center

The History Center is a non-profit organization whose purpose is to preserve and encourage access to its unique collections, while designing learning experiences and services that create opportunities for people to learn about themselves and their place in the world.

With this objective in mind, we organize exhibitions, educational programs, and partner with a diverse range of non-profit organizations throughout Tompkins County to bring original, research-based educational services to the public.

The History Center is located in the Gateway Center on 401 East State Street, Ithaca, NY, but is currently closed to the public as we prepare to move to the Tompkins Center for History and Culture on Bank Alley in the Commons, at 110 North Tioga Street, Ithaca, NY. The new building will open Spring 2019. Contact community@thehistorycenter.net with any questions.

The Eight Square Schoolhouse

The History Center also owns, and recently restored, the Eight Square Schoolhouse, an historic 1827 schoolhouse home to The History Center’s living history program. The Eight Square Schoolhouse is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Eight Square Schoolhouse is located on Upper Hanshaw Road in Dryden, New York. Upper Hanshaw Road is approximately 1/4 mile East of the Tompkins County Regional Airport.

The schoolhouse operates seasonally. Contact eightsquare@thehistorycenter.net with any questions.
