Active Ancestry at The History Center

  • Thu, March 13, 2025
  • 6:00 PM - 7:30 PM

What will we leave behind for the next generation? What will we leave with intention? Join us at the History Center in Tompkins County for a program exploring the history contained in family photos and the different ways you can unleash those stories through DIY heirlooms.

6 p.m. - Show and Tell: Is there a box, binder, or booklet of family photos hiding under your bed? Bring your family photos and we'll take the time to exchange stories as a group. Practice the art of remembering with us.

6:30 p.m. - Demonstration and Inspiration Session with Gerry Monaghan: Gerry Monaghan is a local artist who has coined the term "Active Ancestry." He specializes in helping individuals create mementos that balance the abilities of the current generation with the curiosity of the next. He'll explain the birth of active ancestry, discuss the difference between ephemera and artifacts, and give a handy demonstration on how to digitize printed-photos with household tools. Then, folks will have an opportunity to break-out and explore his personal collection of ephemeral artifacts. Get ready to be inspired!
