ORAL HISTORY OF HOLOCAUST SURVIVORS Who Settled in Tompkins County

Educators are welcome to stream these classroom-ready videos and use the Middle and High School level curricular resources to support learning about the Holocaust.

Eight local Holocaust survivor oral histories are assembled here, each accompanied by a set of curricular resources. The recordings were made between 2013 and 2018 in the Ithaca Jewish community and turned into classroom-length productions by students from the Ithaca College Park Scholars program.

The Park Scholars worked together with the History Center in Tompkins County to research background material and suggest questions for discussion, essays and further investigation. Our hope is that while becoming familiar with Tompkins’ County Holocaust survivors and their life stories, local students and teachers will be personally influenced to learn important lessons about the Holocaust.

The inspiration to pursue this project was initiated by the IAUJC Holocaust Speakers’ Bureau. This is a Tompkins County group of adult children of survivors who tell the stories of our parent’s generation in local classrooms. With precious time remaining, this project reflects our effort to capture some of the first generation stories while we could.

These recordings serve the needs of distance learning for middle and high school students who are studying online or independently, allowing them to hear directly from a few members of our community whose lives were changed forever by the Holocaust.
